Hi, When I installed Win2K, and installed Active Directory, the domain name
I gave was only 3 letters. ABC. I did not use ABC.XYZ.com. What problems is
this going to cause me? I am having some problems with my XP clients now
that they cannot view shares. When I choose a share it will ask me for a
Username and Password, and when I put the users password it asks me for a
different one, so I put my username and password and it works, I am in the
Domain Admins Group.

Will this be because of the problem mentioned before, or is it something
else.

Thanks

It is going to be more trouble than it is worth, just check through this
group to find how many problems are caused by single label domain names.
There are more than I want to mention, due to the fact my brain is getting
vapor locked.

I kind of doubt that your problem is directly associated with the issue of
having a single labeled domain name. See:

300684 - Information about configuring Windows for domains with single-label
DNS names (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300684).

What's going on homes.. Here's the deal you need to script
out net share ipc$ from command prompt everytime you
restart your dc for your xp machines to have network
access.. Why is this? I do not know.. If someone does
please provide the answer..

But in the mean time it works like a charm..

You should not have to manually reshare IPC$ every time the domain
controller restarts. If you do then you've got another issue. When I've
seen this before it's always virus related somehow.

JC, I agree, it is related to a virus, trojan or hack that the machine could
have been possibly hijacked into an FTP server. I would look at this key for
the existing shares:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Shares]

The ipc$ share should exist in there.

If not, then some sort of batch file probably removed it. I would also look
in this key to see what is exactly starting up with the machine at boot time
and see if anything does not belong. I would suggest to google each item to
understand what they are before deleting them. I would also back you your
reg or that specific key prior to deleting anything. Look for anything that
looks like a .bat or .cmd file that is being invoked, then find it, then
edit it to see what it's doing:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
