DNS setup of child and parent domain

Hi Folks:
I have a parent domain and 1 child domain in a forest.
My parent domain is called parentdomain.local and the
child is child.parentdomain.local. When I ping a server
which belongs to the child domain, i get
server.parentdomain.local as the replies. Isnt it suppose
to be server.child.parentdomain.local? Please advise.
From the child domain, if I ping a server in the parent
domain it gives the correct FQDN.
Any thoughs would be appreciated.

If it has registered its address in the parent forward lookup zone it will
reply with the parent suffix. If you have the parent suffix in the
Connection specific DNS suffix it will register in the parent zone and the
child zone, if the primary DNS suffix is correct. The one it replies with
will then depend on your DNS search list, if you move the child suffix to
the top it will answer with the child suffix.
 
Sounds like you need to delegate your child domains DNS zone on your DNS
server.

It sounds like a couple of things may be wrong here. First, makes sure that the parent has delegated the child domain to the DNS server in the child domain.
From the server in the parent, try to ping the FQDN of the DC in the child, if this works, then the delegation is correct. On the parent server, check to see if there
is a record in the parent domain for the child. If it's there, which based on the decription of the problem it is there, delete it. If you need host name resolution
from the parent domain to the child domain, you will need to add a DNS suffix search order list that includes the domain name of the child. This will allow you to
resolve just the hostname for resoureces in the child.

TCP/IP properties DNS tab, "Append these suffixes" put in both parent and
child suffixes.
