I have a computer that is setup as a domain controller
with 10 workstations logging in. No applications, only
files stored.

There have been some problems with the computers logging
into the domain/server - just taking too long.

I believe it was not orginally setup as a DNS so need to
do this as well as (probably) enable Active Directoy.

Is this pretty straight-forward.

You must have a local DNS server, preferrably on the DC, with a zone for the
AD domain (exact DNS Name). Then all Members and the DC must point to this
DNS server only, no ISP's or other external DNS servers are allowed on any
NIC in any position on an AD Domain member.
Hopefully you don't have a Single Label domain name (domain vs. domain.com)
