hello there,

I have a win2k server running Active Directory connecting to a dial-up ISP
with a dynamic IP. The problem I have is that whenever the server goes
online it looses it's internal ip (10.10.1.1) and changes to the IP given to
it by the ISP.... As you can imagine the clients cant then resolve the host
name!

I can go in an add another client with the server host name & internal IP,
and run ipconfig /renew on the clients, but is there any way I can get it
working correctly?

We'll need to make sure we only have one NIC in the DC and
we don't change it.
Whatever role is forcing the DC to change its IP address
needs to be moved to another server.

Hmm, there's only one NIC in the server for the internal network and the
internet connection is done over an external modem...

It's a home network, so only one server....

First and most importantly you did not mention it, but do not use ICS on a
DC with DNS or DHCP installed, you must configure and use RRAS.

On the DC in Network properties in Control panel Advanced menu Advanced
settings make sure the internal interface is at the top of the binding order
and that MS Client and file sharing are not bound to the dial up.

In you dial up connection properties make sure you are using the private
interfaces IP for DNS, do not let your ISP assign DNS on the connection.
Turn off Dynamic updates on the DNS tab of your dial up connection.

Finally make sure in your DNS server properties on the interfaces tab you
have only the IP of your private interface listed, not all IP addresses.

cheers, I'll give that a go tonight....

it's not running ICS, it's got ISA server & Exchange server installed (full
copies, not that bastardised win2000 Sbs!)
