DNS & server logon problems

using Win2K Pro [SP4] (workstation) trying to connect to
Win2000 Server [SP2]. All devices have static IP, server
running AD-integrated DNS.

Reformatted workstation 2 days ago, reinstalled all
necessary software, mapped network drives etc. Everything
was working perfectly until abruptly the next morning I
cannot logon to server - I tried accessing network
resources but to no avail. From server, I can ping all
network devices EXCEPT workstation; from workstation I can
ping all network devices EXCEPT server. (fun huh?)
When trying to login to server from workstation, I get an
error 5719 (No Windows NT or Windows 2000 Domain
Controller is available for domain ****. The following
error occurred: There are currently no logon servers
available to service the logon request.)

I have disabled & enabled workstation NIC, changed DNS
forward & reverse lookup zone properties to 'Allow dynamic
updates': YES (changed from only secure); checked route
print table; examined server event logs & found nothing
out of the ordinary; rebooted server - still same problem.

Sorry to bother with my technical difficulties, but if
anyone can offer any solutions or shed some light on the
situation, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Try to ping the server by IP address from the client. Then from the command prompt type "arp -a" to display the ARP cache table. Look for the IP address of
the server in the cache table. If it's there, verify that the MAC address listed is the correct MAC of the server. From the server do the same thing. Next, check
for IPsec policies. A quick test would be to stop the IPSec policy agent service on both machines and then try pinging again. Lastly, check for packet filters on
either the client or the server. Packet filters can be found in the Advanced properties of TCP/IP on the options tab of both client and server. On the server
check routing and remote access for filtering. IS RRAS open IPRouting>General. Open the properties of each NIC and click on Input Filters or Output filters to
verify no filtering has been enabled.

We have this same exact problem, along with some of the
others mentioned in here. Have any of you big wigs
thought about the fact that all of these problems started
this week? Like maybe we are witnessing a coordinated
attack?

Hard to say.
Do you have a firewall to block 135 access and all other unnecessary ports
from the outside? Have you installed the recent RPC patches?

Curious, was anything else changed, such as WINS, or anything installed?

Can I assume you are only using your internal DNS servers and not your ISP's
in your machines?
