DNS server for internet in different domain

We have an Active Directory server with DNS setup on my LAN. We were
recently bought by a larger company and now we go through one of their
servers for our internet access. The problem that we currently experience is
that if we put our server as the prefered DNS server, we can resolve local
names and aliases but we cannot access the internet. If I enter the other
server as the prefered DNS, we have internet access but cannot resolve local
names and aliases.

From my readings, it seems I need to only configure my DNS server on my
clients and setup forwarders on the server. I tried entering alternate DNS
servers in the DNS list on my server, but it doesn't work.

Is this the right way to setup forwarders?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just found out where to setup forwarders. My new problem lies in the fact
that my DNS server is a root server and I cannot enable forwarders.
I found a technote from Microsoft on how to convert a DNS Server to a Root
DNS Server. I'm just not sure what to do to do the opposite. Do I just
delete the "." folder?

The way I understand it, if your DNS Server is a root server, it probably
contains a Forward Lookup Zone called "." (just a dot). All you have to do
is to delete that zone and you will not longer be a root server.

You can then configure the DNS server of the prent compnay as forwarders and
you should be good to go.

Yup, that did it for me. I just deleted the the "." folder, stopped and
restarted the the DNS and netlogon serives (KB article 298148) and the
forwarder option was now available to me.

Thanks

I solved my problem, but created a new one. I can no longer access our
website which is www.DomainName.com. How can I configure my DNS server to
access our webpage? Does the fact that our website and domain name are the
same create a conflict?

In your DNS forward lookup zone named 'domainname.com' create a new host,
name it 'www' give it the IP address of your website.

Hi,

If you have the "." zone in your DNS server this would indicate that your are Authoritative and no queries will go out
the server. Also you will not be adle to use forwarders. Here is a article that I believe will help you. 298148 How To
Remove the Root Zone (Dot Zone) http://kb/article.asp?id=Q298148

Thanks,
