My dns server is sending packets back to itself. It has done this for years and
I have tried to find it but none of the solutions look like they apply. What can
I post that will help diagnose this?

1) ipconfig /all on the dns server.
2) dnscmd /info on the dns server.
3) copy of the root hints file

Windows 2000 IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : machine2
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . : mydomain.com
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : mydomain.com

Ethernet adapter Valley Lan:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : mydomain.com
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : D-Link DFE-530TX+ PCI Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.49.27
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.49.19
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.49.27
xxx.xxx.49.25
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.49.25
Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.49.27

This didn't work. Win2k server
dnscmd /info
'dnscmd' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Win2k AD, Does it still have a root hints file? or is it cache.dns? I couldn't
find it

1) dnscmd on support tools. Install from the w2k/w3k cd x:\support tools
2) cache.dns in system32\dns

Cheers

Mike, do you have a forwarder set?
How about what is in the nameserver tab? Is it itself and it's partner DNS
IP?
How about what address it's listening under?

THese usually come up in the dnscmd that WIlliam requested...

T1 provider? Outside DNS servers? Mike, need to remove them...they should
only show the nameservers authorative for the internal zone. Those servers
outside have nothing to do with your internal zones...

220, 221, whatever it takes
It's when the electricity gets INTO the computer that things start going wrong.

I made that nameserver change, you don't think thats the issue do you?

I was wondering if you know what I was talking about... '-)

I think so. Maybe remote in and take a look sometime this week (since it's
not critical)...

Oh yea, I know that line. I too have remodeled with a chainsaw! I felt like
it again last week too!
I made the change and have seen another warning in the log since.
I'll be there tonight.
I tried running the dnscmd but I think it might be a leftover from nt4
because I couldn't get the syntax right. I found the CD so I'll install the
right one tonight.
Is the syntax dnscmd <IP> getserverinfo ?
