I have a internal mail server setup behind a firewall with
a private ip address.I want the users to be able to find
internally or externally by its registered name.I have
setup a non active directory dns server and added a host
record to point to its local address. All clients use the
local dns server for resolution. but it still pionts them
to its external address. which will not work behind the
firewall.

Hello Patric,

Can you look at the configuration of the zone file and see that the record
is in fact added?

If you can try to provide me with a network monitor trace
taken on the DNS Server after the DNS Service is restarted and a client
pointing to this DNS Server, we will be able to find out what is going on.

You can send the netmon trace to (e-mail address removed)

I have checked and removed and readded records. It
resolves by netbios but when nslookup is used and local
server is specified it resolve to internet. I will send
off trace as soon as possible.

I assume that you mean by this that it resolves to the external name and
it's not changing the DNS address in their IP properties.
which will not work behind the
firewall.

Some questions:

Is the zone name spelled exactly the same as the external zone?
Are the clients resolving by single name? If so, does the suffix match the
zone?

Is the external zone in the nameservers tab?
