I have a Domain Controller/DNS server at our headquarters
(HQDOMCTL) and at a remote office we have a DC and DNS
server for that office (CFIFAP1). They are members of the
same domain with HQDOMCTL being the master. All are
Windows 2000 Servers.
from the remote server, CFIFAP1, I can ping the servers by
host name and IP. However from HQ, HQDOMCTL, if I ping
CFIFAP1 I get the IP address of HQDOMCTL! I checked
CFIFAP1 and it has the correct IP statically assigned to
it. I checked DNS at both HQ and the remote site and the
IPs are correctly listed.
I don't get any messages of an IP conflict.
I can't figure out why the host name for CFIFAP1 resolves
to the IP address of HQDOMCTL.
Thanks

Try clearing the cache on the client first?
ipconfig /flushdns

It may also be coming from WINS, since that is checked first when you ping a
single label name and the machine is configured to use a WINS server and the
Mode is set to Hybrid (0x8).
