DNS resolution not working.

Hi ..
I have a small home network with 3 Windows XP systems, plus a work laptop
that connects in sometimes. The systems are setup as a workgroup and they
can see each other and share resources, eg they can see each others secondary
hard drives etc.
I am also connected to a DSL modem. I used to be able to browse the web on
all systems but a while ago one the systems stopped being able to browse the
web. I can ping specific IP addresses but I can't ping by name. I get
messages indicated name failed to be resolved.

I have checked the network settings between systems and they appear the same.

I am not sure but the event viewer shows a few errors, the first is,
==================
DCOM Server process launcher service hung on starting
category none
Type error eventid 7022
==================

Any suggestions, short of re-installing would be appreciated.
Cheers
Zach

Open up the services control panel: Start-Run-Services.msc and sort the list
by Startup Type. Anything set to Automatic should say Started in the Status
screen with a few exceptions (Fax for example.) Anything that lists as
Automatic and is not Started click on and click Start the Service on the left
side.

If turning these services on doesn't work, post back here which services
would not start and what message they gave you tried to start them.

Hi..
Thanks for the idea.

I have checked all the services that are marked automatic. Only two do no
show as started, both fail to start:
Task Scheduler - Error 1721: Not enough resources are available to
complete this operation
Security Centre - Error 1803: The executable program that this service
is configured to run does not implement this service.

There is a third service DCOM Server Process Launcher which has a status of
"STARTING".

The DCOM Server Process Launcher is your issue. It doesn't have any services
dependent on it, but it does allow some manual services to run. I'll see what
I can track down on it.
