Hello all.
Im in process of learning DNS on window 2k .. I had activedirectory
installed on this system , since i have removed activedirectory , and
reinstalled clean DNS .
but when i creat my zone, all recordes assosiated to new zone such as SOA ,
NS etc, keep showing old domain name that was the name given when i
installed active directory the first time.
Althogh i did manually renamed them to reflect new zone. but i was just
wondring , why this is happening . and how i can make it stop ?

Thanks

Probably never deleted the system32\dns folder. The original zone file still
existed.

Thanks..
actually, i have delete that folder before reinstalling DNS ..
I think this is something to do with active directory, leaving some kinda
files even after deleting that from the system.

Never tested it, but if you removed DNS while the zone is AD Integrated,
then the zone I would assume would still exist in AD. You can use ADSI Edit
to view the zone info. Look in the Domain NC partition under Microsoft
Services. Usually suggest to change the zone to a Primary zone then remove
DNS to eliminate that.

But if you demoted AD, then reinstalled it with a new name, then what I
mentioned above wouldn't count. DId you check the registry? Zone info is
also stored in there.

Ideally, to remove AD and DNS properly, one would demote AD, restart, then
remove DNS, then restart, then reinstall DNS, then create the zone in DNS,
then set the Primary DNS suffix to the new zone name on the machine (which
is the name the netlogon service uses to register into DNS), then restart,
then promote the machine up to a DC.

Usually it's not necessary to remove DNS unless there's serious issues with
it. You would just delete the zone and recreate the new zone. If the same
zone name, then we would insure to remove the zone out of the system32\dns
folder, along with the backup of the zone file in the system32\dns\backup
folder (which it can be getting it from there too). So it highly depends on
the steps, what order you performed them in, and if you missed any crucial
steps. If you didn't restart after removing DNS, then the zone info would
probably have stayed..

AD and DNS is pretty dynamic and easy to work with. If the zone info looks
the same when you reinstalled AD wtih the same exact names, then I wouldn't
doubt that the same exact info looks like it did from the old installation,
since the data is pretty consistent with the SRVs, etc.
