DNS question in XP

Hello-
I have a windows 2000 server and 2000/XP clients. I have
found that if i do not list my windows 2000 DNS server to
my XP clients, they cannot browse over the LAN to other
computers. It will ask them to supply a username and
password to try and connect. If they offer their username
and password it states that the given username and
password has already been tried but there is no domain
controller available to verify.

Now, if i list my DNS server as the last available name
server to my clients, all of my clients are able to
browse, but now their name resolution in IE is not 100%
reliable. It says that the page cannot be displayed, and
cannot find server. Or it says cannot open the search
page.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.
