DNS Q's: Configuration with Child Domains

Here is my scenario:
Windows 2000 Server (DNS/AD Integrated)
I have a root domain (parent.domain) and I have 2 child domains
(child1.parent.domain and child2.parent.domain). Currently I have 1 DNS zone
that is hosted by a single server in parent.domain, and both child domains
show up within it's zone. I understand that this is not the best way to do
this correct? Instead I should delegate both child zones out and set up
forwarders back to the parent zone from their respective DNS servers. Am I
so far correct on this? The second issue I have is with resolving hostnames.
Currently I reside in child1.parent.domain, and I can resolve computers by
their hostname in child1.parent.domain and parent.domain, but I cannot
resolve computer is child2.parent.domain. Once I delegate a server for
child1.parent.domain and child2.parent.domain, what steps should I take to
assure that all clients in child1.parent.domain and child2.parent.domain can
access machines by hostname in all other domains?

Lastly, I am also interested in creating redundancy but I'm not sure the
best way to go about it. I have set up a few slaves to help out, but I am
really wanting to come up with a solution for having more than one
authoritative server for each of the 3 domains in case one goes down. Anyone
have any good resources or tips for this?

Thanks.
John

you might wanna take a look at:

although it applies to w2k you can also use it for w2k3. In w2k3 you
can additionally configure replication scopes for each AD-I DNS zone
