Hi all. Here is my situation
I am running an AD domain. A computer at a remote location, which is
connected to our domain and getting a valid IP address from our domain, is
unable to share files.
It is running windows 95 and I have gone through the process of setting up a
share corectly.
I have noticed if i Ping the computers IP address it works with no problems.
If i do a tracert on its IP it goes through and also confirms that systems
name, computername.
BUT if i ping computername, it does not go through, could this be the cause
of my problems? Could this be DNS related?
Thank you for any help!!!
Any suggestions?

It could be DNS, simply from the standpoint that a host record for the Windows 95 machine isn't registered in the DNS zone. Windows 95 machines will not
register dynamically in DNS so this is a manual process. The problem though boils down to name resolution. DNS or WINS can be used. WINS is prefered
since Win9x clients prefer netbios name resolution over DNS host resolution and the clients can register dynamically with WINS. The easiest way to fix this
would be to install a WINS server and point everyone at that WINS server.

Thank you,

Unfortunately, NetBIOS names do not cross routers. You would need some sort
of NetBIOS name resolution solution for this. WINS is normally recommended.
You can also use LMHOSTS files for this, but is cumbersome to administer in
a large network.

No, this would not be a DNS issue.
