DNS problem?

I set up a network with Win2000 server and things seem fine. I added a
forwarder in DNS and it seems there is only one problem.
We cannot access our web site, even with the IP address,
Internal domain is bgcmeriden.org and we farm out the web site which is the
same. I understand this is not a problem. We are able to access ANY OTHER
SITE with no problem at all. I can access our web site from any PC outside
the network, in other words at home. It's just the web site we farm out to
someone we cannot access from within the internal network. Any ideas????

I think you need to create a new host record and call it www , give it the
IP of your website and it should resolve OK.

I went into DNS and into the domain folder. It let me add a new host with the
IP address of the web site and said it added successfully but still no luck.
Am I missing something???

Did you run ipconfig /flushdns?
Also, in case your trying to access the web site by just bgcmeriden.org, you
can't. That record (same as parent folder) must only have the domain
controller's IP address. You must add a record named www, and use
www.bgcmeriden.org to access the site. If you want to use only
http://bgcmeriden.org you have to configure IIS on the DCs to redirect the
site to http://www.bgcmeriden.org, This is the only work around I know of
other than using a proxy server on the DCs.

In addition to Kevin's suggestions, not to use the http://mydomain.com URL,
but rather only www.mydomain.com since your external and internal domain
names are the same, I would also make sure the IP you gave the www record is
the internal private IP, not the external one.

Okay, I'm confused. Ace, you say NOT to give the www record the external IP
address and another guy says TO give the www record the external website IP
address?
Also, I create a "new host record" in the forward zone called www, correct???
Either way it doesn't seem to work. I tried www.bgcmeriden.org versus
http://www.bgcmeriden.org also.

Sorry Bill, I got confused.

If your website is being hosted externally (hosting provider), give it the
external IP.

If you are hosting it internally, give it the internal IP.

I hope that clears things up.

:-)

That's Okay Ace, I know what confusion is, believe me. Speaking of which.....
Am I correct with the following?
I go into DNS on the DC
I expand the bgcmeriden domain folder
I right click on "Forward Zone" and click on "Add new host"
I put in "www' and give it the IP address of the external web site
The host registers as "www.bgcmeriden.org"
I access by using "www.bgcmeriden" and NOT http://www.bgcmeriden.org"
If this is right it is not working . Now THAT's confusion!!!!
Any ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks Ace

YOu mean bgcmeridan.org folder? I just want to get this straight beacuse
single label names are problematic.
I right click on "Forward Zone" and click on "Add new host"
I put in "www' and give it the IP address of the external web site
YEP!

The host registers as "www.bgcmeriden.org"
Yep

I access by using "www.bgcmeriden" and NOT http://www.bgcmeriden.org"

You left off the .org of the first one, so whether you use:

http://www.bgcmeridan.org
or
www.bgcmeridan.org
It will work.

But not without the ".org" part, unless your zone name in DNS doesn't have
the .org? (This is important).

If this is right it is not working . Now THAT's confusion!!!!
Any ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks Ace

My mistake...I am sure I tried bgcmeriden.org....both
http://www.bgcmeriden.org and just www.bgcmeriden.org and neither worked
after I created the "new host" in the forward zone. Yes, this was in the
folder "bgcmeriden.org".
Bare in mind I do not have IIS configured on the DC should that make any
difference.
Let me get in to work Monday and confirm that I did add it correctly and that
I did try both http://www.bgcmeriden.org and just www.bgcmeriden.org. but I
am pretty sure I did try both.
If you cannot suggest anything more right now I will get back Monday and
confirm I definitely tried both.
Thankyou much for your attention.

Cheers

You may need to run ipconfig /flushdns to clear a cached negative answer.

IIS is no needed on the DC unless you want to use http://bgcmeriden.org to
access the site, even then you must configure IIS to redirect the site to
http://www.bgcmeriden.org

Keep in mind, there is NO difference between:
http://www.bgcmeriden.org and www.bgcmeriden.org. A browser will auto append
"http://". The issue is to straighten out what IP you gave the www record
and whether it works or not.

On the other hand, http://bgcmeriden.org is another issue, and expect your
user to always use www in front of it, otherwise, you'll need to do what
Kevin suggested.

I flushed my DNS by running ipconfig /flushDNS but it doesn't seem to matter.
If I go to "run" and enter www.bgcmeriden.org I get the message below that
the browser is looking for site xx.xxx.xxx.xxx but then it defaults to the
redirector and says it cannot find site www.bgcmeriden.org. Short of
confirming the IP address entered in the "new host" can you suggest anything
else? When "www.bgcmeriden.org" is typed in the address bar it tells me right
away it cannot find the site.

Thanks

Bill, try to clear the DNS server cache too. That is done by rt-clicking on
the DNS server name, select Clear Cache.

Otherwise, everything seems properly configured from what I can see and what
has been transpired so far in this thread. I would like to ensure your
configuration is correct. Can you please post an *unedited* ipconfig /all
before we go any further?

Thanks,
Ace

Thanks for posting that. I wanted to make sure your config is fine, which it
looks like it.

This is confusing. I pinged www.bgcmeriden.org and it resolves to
216.244.121.10. Correct? Is that the IP address you used when you created
the www record?

Also, when I tried to go to the website, I got "The page cannot be found",
HTTP 400 - Bad Request.

I have some questions, and pardon me if this was already addressed, and
after reading thru the thread, I just want to make absolutely sure one more
time:

1. On what webserver is this site being hosted?
2. Is it a webserver on your network, or is it being hosted on a webserver
somewhere else on the Internet?
3. If being hosted elsewhere, is the IP address of that webserver somewhere
else supposed to be 216.244.121.10?
4. Is that the IP address you gave when you created the 'www' record under
bgcmeriden.org?

I will address these issues as soon as I get in. I got the IP address from
the guy who handled the IT before I got there. He may be out of touch. If
this is true it's my fault for not double checking myself.
The website is farmed out to "web solutions" which is local but has nothing
to do with our network at all.
I will let you know as soon as I check it out.
Thanks much
