Can you use any other DNS product other than MS'DNS for
Active Directory. Is there a recommended solution? How
robust is MS' DNS?

Thx.

It MUST support srv records. Ideally it should support dynamic updates but
this is not a must.

Not sure what you mean by "robust"?

In addition, it _must_ support SRV records.

Thanks. Would you recommend using another solution other

"Robust" I meant is it durable, something that does not
crashes or corupts easily.

Thank you.

No. I have had MS DNS running for about 3 years with *absolutely* *nothing*
going wrong with the service.

No hiccup no glitch no crash *nothing* it just works.

It is solid. I would not use anything other than Windows DNS since it so
tightly integrated into the functionality of AD.

No, MS DNS is the best solution when used in conjunction with Active
Directory. It's easy, almost never fails if properly configured, much more
secure if you use AD integrated zones, and best of all, it is already there
and free with the OS.

crashes or corrupts [sic] easily.

Most DNS problems can be traced to improper configuration, if DNS is not
properly configured, it does not make a difference in whose software you
use, it won't work right, if at all.

Thank you for the great feedbacks! I will stick with it
if possible. My manager is leaning towards UNIX DNS.

You can use BIND 9.2.3 as it will support srv records and will do dynamic
DNS. I think you would need some really compelling reason not to use MS DNS
with AD. It is well integrated and stable. There is also the additional
item that BIND will not support the Kerberos authentication that client
machines will attempt to do for registering their srv and ptr entries. Your
BIND machine will fill up with errors all day - it is sort of ugly.
Otherwise it will work - if you feel like running yet another server.

Absolutely -- If you have a specific and good reason to do so. Such
as corporate politics where one department controls DNS and you have
to use what they provide. Otherwise, there's not much of a legitimate
reason, especially when using AD.

Microsoft's DNS fits that bill. In fact, it's almost always the other
stuff on a server that crashes it.
