DNS not forwarding, recursive test fails

You've probably heard this one a thousand times, but its driving me
crazy.

Running 3 windows 2000 sp4 DCs all running AD integrated DNS.

I enabled forwarding and specified my ISPs 2 name servers.
I was told not to disable recursion.

If I specify just the LAN dns on a workstation it cannot resolve
internet domains. I tried the monitoring tests and the recursive query
fails.

Is it a question of specifying the internet gateway somewhere that I
havent found yet? I dont see what I am missing.

Do you have the internet Gateway on the DNS server's NIC?
Are Root hints resolved to an IP address?
