Hi,

I have a problem with ny home W2K SP4. It looks like name resolution is not
working. I can ping web sites IP but I cannot browse same website by name. I
did reinstall tcp/ip and winsock2 but nothing good happend. I also tried sfc
and finnaly installed W2K over previous installation but nothing.

Any idea?

Do you have you dns servers set up to
from your ISP either in tcpip proprties
or in any router you may be using?
James

Yep, I can release and renew dhcp settings without problems including dns
settings. I can ping ISP's dns server. I even call them to see if they have
problem maybe, their servers are doing fine. They sugested me to call MS. I
have dual boot with Linux and If I switch to Linux it works just fine.

Make sure you reboot computer after repairing winsock. Try to ping your ISP
dns servers [use ipconfig /all to see what they are] and use the nslookup
command to see if it displays your dns servers and if it does try to resolve
an internet name using it. If you are using a software firewall, port 53 udp
traffic needs to be allowed out to the internet. If you have enabled tcp/ip
filtering, that can cause dns to fail. If you have hardware device
protecting you from the internet you can also try booting into safe mode
with networking to see if that works and if it does you have a conflict with
a startup program/service. --- Steve

Not DHCP,...DNS,...is you machine getting a DNS setting?

From a command prompt type "ipconfig /all",...find the right
interface,..does it have a DNS entry?

I can ping ISP's dns servers. I have a firewall but even if I disable
firewall it doesn't work. I forgot to tell if I boot in safe mode with
networking it works. So you think some of programs in startup prevent dns
resolution? OK I let you know later today I am in office know.

Thanks for replies.

That wood be my guess. You can use msconfig to selectively disable startup
programs. It does not come with W2K but a copy from XP will work or download
a copy from the internet by searching Google for msconfig download. ---
