Strange issue

NT 4 Domain controller new window XP clients with latest
service packs etc etc ....

XP somehow looses the DNS of the local intranet

out of the blue intranet is unavailble and the only thing
you have to do is ipconfig /renew ...

Does anybody know what is going on ?

Mail me please ;-)

Is your server providing DNS or is a router (like linksys/dlink) providing
your DNS service?

Can you give more details on your home configuration?

The DNS is a NT 4 server , but what i don't undestand is
the fact that the ' workaround ' ( ipconfig /renew ) does
nothing else then obtain a new lease ? ( which didn't
expire in the first place , so it must be something local
on the clients ( my manager tried adding it in WINS but
nothing

Instead of "ipconfig /renew" try "ipconfig /flushdns" which will clear your
DNS client cache. If this works, then the next time you lose name resolution
try "ipconfig /displaydns" which will show you the dns records your client
has in cache. Verify if the records are correct or not. Also check your
HOSTS file to make sure you don't have the Qhosts virus.

ok , i don't have the virus

flushdns worked , so now i'm waiting for it to happen
again , but can you tell me what i'm looking for ?

If the DNS server is a DDNS server than DHCP can be used to update DNS
records. Atleast this is the behavior on Win2k-Win2k3 Server.

IPCONFIG /RENEW triggers DHCP to proxy to DDNS on your computers behalf for
name registration.
