This is a strange one:

have a win2k domain with two DCs running AD-integrated
DNS. have never had an issue with any of the 2k machines,
or XP machines.

now that we are starting to bring in some win2003 servers,
i have noticed that now and then the win2003 server host
records disappear from our win2k AD dns. it is only the
windows 20003 boxes that this happens to.

any ideas?
thanks,
Wes

Does it just loose the Host record?
What about srv records?

is the 2003 only pointing to that dns server no secondaries?

Does the 2003 machine have any secondary network cards?

Hi George,

Like all our win2k servers (and XP clients), these servers
are set to point to the first DC as primary DNS server and
second DC as secondary DNS server. not sure why these
boxes would have SRV records in the dns because they are
not domain controllers, only member servers... is that
correct?

also, all our xp clients are using dhcp. however, I
switched one over to having a static ip yesterday, and
noticed that it is now exhibiting the same problem, its
host record got killed. this doesn't happen to any of our
win2k servers with static ips... strange eh?

thanks!
Wes

Unless scavenging is enabled for the zone, the DNS server itself will not remove the entries. The 2003 server or some other machine may be sending a
deregistration request which would cause the record to get removed. Enabled logging on the DNS server and check the DNS.LOG file or deregistrations.
This may offer a clue.

Thank you,
Mike Johnston
