Good day all,

i am posting this thread here as well maybe i should have posted here befor,
i hope i get an answer here.

i am not too familiar with win2000 DNS and i have to upgrade to win2k
domain. i have an NT4 PDC and BDC and i want to make the switch to win2k. i
know that for a AD domain we absolutly need DNS. i've decided to install DNS
on one of my win2k machine and point to once the upgrade to AD is underway.
1- is this a sane solution?
2- i've noticed that the newly formed DNS server has changed domain from
what it used to be (lets call it domain1) to the name of the zone (lets call
it AAA.com) is this normal?
3- i've created a Standard Primary zone. do i have to change it to Active
Directory-Integrated once the AD is installed?

please note that this server is completely expandable so i have no worries
and no problems nuking it.

thanks in andvance

Why wait to use it? Start getting used to using only your DNS, and not the
ISP's. Using the ISP's in your AD machines will cause havoc (DCs, member
servers and clients). Only use your internal DNS and configure a forwarder
to your ISP's. This article shows you how to config a forwarder:

2- i've noticed that the newly formed DNS server has changed domain

Are you saying you had a Primary zone created under the Forward Lookup Zones
called, let's say, 'MYDOMAIN", and it was changed to
'someOtherDomainName.com" ? I can't see that happening. Maybe you set the
domain name as the Primary DNS Suffix?

Keep in mind, whether migrating or upgrading, you need to choose a domain
name for AD that is based on a hierarchal structure that is DNS compliant ,
such as "domain.com', domain.net, or even domain.zessler. Don't use a single
label name or you will be inviting trouble.

3- i've created a Standard Primary zone. do i have to change it to
Active Directory-Integrated once the AD is installed?

That zone type is only available on an AD DC. If it's a member server or
stand alone, the only option is Primary or Secondary. Ideally, and not sure
of what your upgrade or migration plans are, but I would suggest to plan on
having DNS on a DC.

Hope that helps.
