I believe this is related to DNS. We have been having an issue
recently with internet browsing being rather slow when going to some
selected different sites.

Windows 2000 Domain. Windows XP clients doing DHCP for all services.

The windows 2000 servers are all capable of browsing the internet and
the specific site (for this post, I will use www.optonline.net which
has been giving us a problem) can be reached with no problems.

The windows xp clients are capable of browsing the internet and for the
most part do not have problems, however, when attempting to browse to
www.optonline.net they hit a wall. It does not error out and will
eventually load the page but it takes about 5-6 minutes for that to
happen.

The issue is not limited to Optonline.net, it also happens with some
other sites, but that one is the worst.

Has anyone seen such behavior? It is very frustrating to try and
replicate.

I have attempted setting a Windows XP client to a static IP address
with the same DNS and other settings as one of the Windows 2000 servers
to see if the issue went away but it did not.

This only started recently (last 4 or 5 days) and prior to that
internet speed was just fine with almost no delay when browsing to a
website.

What makes you think it is DNS?

Since it reaches the site ("rather slow") it must
be resolving the DNS name through some mechanism.

Have you tested (yet) with NSLookup to determine if
these sites resolve slowly?

If so, have you tried NSLookup explicitly against both
your own DNS server(s) and every one of the destination
servers involved?

nslookup www.SlowSite.com Your.DNS.IP.Address
nslookup www.SlowSite.com Each.DNS.Forwarder.Address
nslookup www.SlowSite.com Destination.DNS.IP.Address

You may need to include "-time=10" (or some value) parameters
to determine if timeouts are involved....

What makes you think that the site is not the source of
the problem? (And perhaps differences in browser
versions on the clients might be contributing.)

[But FYI: That site loaded almost instantly for me the one
time I tried it.]

Also, post the (unedited, text only) output from the IPConfig /all
of both a machine you think is acting normally and one that is
"slow".

Look for differences in the IPConfig /all and post them here.
