DNS is slow

My internet browsing is slow. When you first go to a
website it take a long time (20 Seconds). Then after that
it is really fast. When I go to a site by IP it is
instant. What can be causing this delay?

I can't say unless you give me more to go on, here. Like, do you have a
local DNS server?
If you have a local DNS are you using your local DNS in TCP/IP properties?
(You should be)
If you have a local DNS server, have you set up a forwarder in on the
Forwarders tab? (optional but recommended)

I have a local DNS server that I am using in my TCP/IP
properties.
I have a forwader and its still slow. I tried it with and
without the forwarder.

Is the local DNS server the only one you are using in TCP/IP properties?
Have you check your event log for any events?
What names are in your DNS search list?
Is it slow when you run nslookup against it?
Use the "set d2" option in nslookup.
If nslookup resolves the name quickly you may have a networking issue.

In addition, I would suggest to try to change the forwarder to 4.2.2.2 and
see if that improves it.

Also, if there is a firewall or Proxy in place with rules, there could be a
delay with resolution traffic.

I'm assuming this is a W2k DNS server.

I am only using one local DNS server. This error is there
from 12/19/03 :Event Type: Warning
Event Source: DNS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5504
Date: 12/19/2003
Time: 3:44:04 PM
User: N/A
Computer: PMBCM_S1
Description:
The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a
packet from 192.58.128.30. The packet is rejected.

I have removed the 192.58.128.30 entry from the root hints.

Its not slow through NSlookup

What type of networking issues?

That error is saying that one of YOUR machines has an illegal character in
the hostname, such as an underscore or a space. It's probably forwarding it
out to that Root server for whatever reason. Search thru your records for
the offending machine.

Hi Ace,
I don't know what happened to the reply I did earlier, but apparently, it is
his DC with the underscore.
:: Computer: PMBCM_S1

I'm not sure why it is going out to the internet DNS servers maybe his
search list in one of his computers. He may have an external domain in his
search list that is causing it to go out to the Root servers but removing
that server from the Root Hints is going to cause slow external resolution.
I suggest he put the Root server back in and review his DNS search list on
all machines. And remove any domain name that is not on his local DNS
server.

Yea, you're right. Missed that one. Glad you caught it. I think it has
something to do on the same lines as why a single label name goes out to the
Roots, hence why they stopped it with SP4. I just don;t know the exact
mechanisms or reason.

I agree, that DC's name needs to be changed, one way or another.
