Hello. We have a Win2000 server with XP Pro clients. Some of these clients
have bee randomly losing their internet connection, some times there is no
internet at all, other times it's to IP's only. A reboot of the workstation
fixes the problem. The internet is set up so that the router is plugged in
to a newtowrk point, allowing any computer connecting to the network an
internet connection (even if not a member of the domain). I went on to the
server to have a look at the event viewer, all seems to be okay in there.
Any
ideas and suggestions on what could be happening - is it the XP pro clients
or the Win2000 server, or our ISP?

Thanks
Gavin

Disable the power saver features on the NICs in Device Manager. You have to
click through serveral dialogs to get there, but it is there.

It has been fine untill recently, even thought the internet connection is
lost, connection to folders on the server is still available.

I will give this a try in the morning though.

thank you!
Gavin

Then it probably isn't the cause, but I usually turn it off so I don't have
to worry about it anyway. I don't know what else it could be at the moment.

Hard to say. Check your DNS (I'm presuming you're using AD). All servers and
workstations should specify *only* the internal AD-integrated DNS server's
IP address in their network settings. The AD-integrated DNS server should be
set up with forwarders to your ISP's DNS servers for external resolution.
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300202 for more
info.

If the users are getting DNS resolution errors, try different DNS servers in
the forwarders.

Will give this a shot in the morning! Sods law that is never happens to me,
and never happens when you try and make it happen. Will let you know.

Gavin.

Hi.

All our workstations have automatically assigned DNS selected, this seems to
work fine. Its just sometimes certain computers will lose their connection
(about 3 out of the 30 we have).

Today when it happened, i went in to the services, and restarted the DHCP
service on the workstation, after doing this it worked.

Any ideas what could be wrong? restarting a service is quicker than
restarting the computer, but still a pain.

Which one - your AD DNS IP? Not an external one?

Look in the system event logs on the workstations that are experiencing this
problem...

Doing an ipconfig all, the DNS is the AD server.

Event logs dont show anything wrong (it was only a quick look i managed to
have today though).
