DNS in what circumstances?

Scenario:
I have a w2k server and about 10 PCs..
All users access w2k server to get resources (shared files
and printers). Users also access other users pc for shared
files. There is a ADSL modem attached in the server to
access internet. All the users shared this connection
using a router.

My question is:
1. I am confused as whether i need to install DNS in the
server or not?
2. If no, then in what circumstances i need to install DNS?
Pls help, as i need to set them urgently for my company.
Thanks

If you promote the server to a domain controller, Win2k domains require DNS
and that all domain members point to it for DNS only.

It would seem to me that if your current network
configuration is meeting your needs then you don't need to
add the complexity of DCs, AD, DHCP, DNS.

Right now you probably have an outside service hosting
your email. If you decided to take over the administation
of your email and bring it in house that is a circumstance
where you would want to go the DC, AD, DHCP, DNS route.

If you have AD isntalled on the server, then yes, you need DNS. All machines on the network that are members of this AD
should then only point to this DNS server for DNS. If you don't have AD, don't worry about.
