Hi I have to use a host file to specify a local server ip and DNS(to go to
internet). Can I get if if host file and put the local IP in a DNS entry?
Please help.

Hello (e-mail address removed),

Please describe your network setup, server, switches and internet access.
If you only have one machine normally the router is also DNS server for your
machine.

Thansk, I wil try to explain below:
I have two win 2000 servers(application and database server).
Each server have two network cards and use a hub(1 GB) connect each other)
local IP: 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.101
The other network cards connect to internet.
192.168.0.100 is setup accept email relay and 192.168.0.101 use
192.168.0.100 to relay email out.
If I don't put 192.168.0.100 in host file, the email won't go out, I think
it can't find in DNS.
I have to put 192.168.0.100 in host file and specify 192.168.0.100 in smart
host in order to let it work.
Can I put 192.168.0.100 local ip in DNS and get rid of host file?

Why do you need to use a host file for that?

Why not run DNS on the 2000 Server(s)?

Point the internal DNS clients (including the servers themselves) to
the INTERNAL DNS server -- add whatever zones and records
you need there.

Have the INTERNAL DNS Servers FORWARD to your ISP.

Hello (e-mail address removed),

Why do you not install your own DNS server? Think it will be more easy then
using host file. Additional i wouldn't use both NIC's on this way, why not
choosing one NIC on the hub, i prefer switches because they minimize traffic,
and connect via the hub to the internet?

Thanks for the help.
Yes. Both server have DNS installed. If I remove host file, the email won't
go to relay server(192.168.0.100), even I specified 192.168.0.100 as smart
host. How to add 192.168.0.100 to my local DNS server. Thanks again.

Create a new record for the host name in the zone.

Ok, since that is so trivial there must be something that we or you
are misunderstanding.

Do you have any zones on your internal server? (for you domains?)

Thanks Herb,
The two servers are in workgroup not domain mode. How to add a local IP to
the DNS? Please advice.

Irrelevant except that you might not yet have (bothered with)
a Zone. (In a domain that would have been required.)
How to add a local IP to the DNS? Please advice.

Add a zone. Anything you want. YourName.local will work.

Add the name to that. Give all the machines this zone name
for their "Primary DNS suffix" in the System Control panel.

AD Domains need DNS, but DNS works just fine (and
basically the same) without AD.

Why not just relay to the IP address instead of the name?

Btw, what name are you specifying in the hosts file? Is it
relayserver.domain.local or just 'relayserver'?
