Has anyone heard of this..

I have a Windows SBS 2000 server running ADS....I also have a DSL internet
connection with a Sonicwall firewall..

The clients all havethe Windows 2000 server as their primary DNS server and
the Windows 2000 server forwards all Internet requests..

The problem is after a few days the Internet connection slows to a crawl
until the Windows 2000 server is restarted..

To test I have setup a client to use the ISP's DNS server as it's primary
DNS server to see if the Windows 2000 server is really causing the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dan

When you say using the Windows 2000 as their primary DNS does that mean you
are using your ISP's as the Secondary?

If you are this is not the correct setup you should *not* use you ISP's DNS
in any position on any machine, use only your Win2k DNS even if it is the
only one. You win2k is the only DNS server that can resolve your local
domain.

If you want you can use your ISP's DNS as a forwarder in your Local DNS
server as per step 3 of this KB article make sure you delete the "." forward
lookup zone: 300202 - HOW TO Configure DNS for Internet Access in Windows
2000
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300202&FR=1

The clients use only the Windows 2000 server as their primary DNS and no
secondary....

I did setup a client with the ISP's DNS, knowing the problems associated
with the local domain, but I needed to eliminate the Windows 2000 DNS server
as a problem slowing down the Internet connection. This is was only a test
and so far the Internet has not slowed down on that client.

If you just cycle the DNS service on the server, does the problem go away?
If so, make sure you are running the latest SP on the server. I've seen
similar problems (where DNS would just stop functioning) with SP2 and
earlier on Windows 2000 Servers. Never saw the issue again after SP3.

Thanks John...

I need to try that... but the client seems to just recycle the server. I've
tried to tell him that I need to diagnose the problem and there is something
I would like to try before you restart the server....like restarting the DNS
service...but....he just restarts the server willy nilly.....

users...you can't live with them ...and you can't live without them.......

Time for the "smoke in mirrors" attempt then. Schedule a batch job to run
once a day. The batch job should contain one line:

net stop dns && net start dns

I like to restart services as a compound command like this. If the first
part fails, the second part won't run. Works well for restarting stuff
like VNC remotely!
users...you can't live with them ...and you can't live without them.......

Well we could live without them, we just wouldn't make too good of a
living!
