Hi.
I came across this microsoft site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;255248 and tried following the steps in creating a
child domain where the preferred dns is pointing to itself
(child domain) but i ran into problems. I followed the
entire step except when specifying the parent DNS address
on the child. I used the child's DNS. I got stuck in the
Network Credential screen. It gave me this "The domain is
not an active directory domain, or an active directory
domain controller for the domain could not be
contacted". I ran netdiag, nslookup, dcdiag on the
server (which is the DNS server also), all the test passed.

Would anyone know what step I missed (which is not
documented on the site)? Need reply asap.

And I found a QA (HOw do i set up a dns for a child
domain) on http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291382. I'm
a bit confused with the ff statement: "Create a secondary
zone on the child DNS server that transfers the parent
zone from the parent DNS server.". The link provided
after the answer asks me to create a primary forward zone
on the child domain but the Answer for the question says i
create a secondary zone on the child dns server. Is the
information posted on both sites correct? Which one
should be followed?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;255248 is the right
article to follow. Re-read it trough and repeat the steps. Basically you
need
1. Have a functioning DNS server in the parent domain. Examine your DNS
server for existence of right DNS records (_msdc, _sites, _tcp, _udp
folders)
2. Create a delegation of dns child domain to child dns server
3. Point your server which will host child AD to parent DNS settings
4. Install DNS server on child DNS server
5. Create a child domain zone in child DNS server and enable dynamic updates
(a must)
6. install dc. After reboot see if proper DNS records have been configured
7. At the end, point child DNS server settings to itself and configure
forwarders to point to parent DNS server.

If you have any problem with this points post back your questions.

When you create a delegation, you must enter an IP number of your child
domain future DC. This server should have static IP address and that addres
you must enter in delegation wizard. You don't need to click resolve button,
as your child domain DC is not running DNS at that point in time. You do
this later.
You need forwarders in the child DNS, so, that your child DNS server can
resolve querise that it is not authoritative for. This way it passws them to
your parent DNS server for resolution.
