Every so often the AD on this machine will go down with
the following errors. At that point, a houseplant would
have a better chance of servicing network requests for
resources than this server would.

It'll sometimes go weeks before collapsing. Cannot find a
solution! Arg.. Here is the specific info on this server
and its problem. Appreciate any insights.

**WINDOWS 2000 SERVER RUNNING SP4

Event ID: 4015
The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the
Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is
functioning properly. The event data contains the error.

Event ID: 4004
The DNS server was unable to complete directory service
enumeration of zone .. This DNS server is configured to
use information obtained from Active Directory for this
zone and is unable to load the zone without it. Check
that the Active Directory is functioning properly and
repeat enumeration of the zone. The event data contains
the error.

Event ID: 4000
The DNS server was unable to open Active Directory. This
DNS server is configured to obtain and use information
from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the
zone without it. Check that the Active Directory is
functioning properly and reload the zone. The event data
is the error code.

Your ipconfig looks good. Thanks for posting that up front. I wish other
posters would do the same, it's really a huge helpful start for diagnosing.

Sometimes this can be caused by an overloaded server. Since the zone is in
AD, at startup (or when AD fails), if the DNS service is initializing first
before the AD database, then the DNS server cannot find the zone, since it's
AD Integrated and it is stored in the AD database. If you have more than one
server, you can point to the second server as the first address, and then
the second address would be itself. Likewise on the other server. If you
have just the one, you can change the zone to a Primary to eliminate this
error, otherwise you can just ignore it, since it's only at startup (or when
AD dumps on you).

I would in this case, possibly suggest to find out what's going on with AD,
which seems to the issue here. The DNS error is just a symptom of this. Why
would it go down? Are there any NTDS errors, FRS errors, Netlogon, or any
other errors in your Event log?
