Dns Disabling it's self

I am running a SBS w/ win 2000. It acts as my DC, DNS,
Exchange server and has AD. Everytime I reboot this
machine the dns does not start. Either I can turn dns to
manual and of course I would need to start it manually.
If I set the machine to automatic it will show up as
disabled after the reboot. I currently only have one dns
server running (my bad), but this really makes me
stressed to get the dns back up after a reboot. Any
suggestions as to why the dns keeps on disabling itself?

This may be unrelated, but I'll give it a go. The group
policy in the Active Directory displays an access denied
message everytime I try to open it, and I cannot create
any policies. Is there a way to reset the permissions on
this? And could this be related to my dns problems?

Thanks for any help!!

I am having the same problem. I was given the following fix by my regular support folks but it has not worked for me yet
1. Open a command prompt as Administrato
2. Type "route print" then ENTER to show the default gateway, which in my case set itself to 192.168.1.2 after rebootin
3. Type "route delete 0.0.0.0" then ENTER to clear
4. Type "route add 0.0.0.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1" to set my default gatewa

Thanks for any suggestions

There might be some SBS specific stuff which is setting your DNS server
service to "disabled". You should also post this question to the SBS disc.
group (if there is one) to see if that is the case.

Let me answer assuming that SBS is not doing anything funky. So you are
saying that your service settings for DNS server are set to automatic, but
post reboot, they get set to disabled, and the server hasn't started? That
is strange. Even if for some reason the DNS server hits a problem during
start and is not able to start, the service configuration should never
change. Can you check the system event log if there any events from the
service control manager which indiciate a problem? Also check the DNS
eventlog to see if the DNS server is logging any errors / warnings.

I checked the event logs and the only entry I found w/
regards to DNS is this one that appeared post reboot.

Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS
records failed because no DNS servers are available.

I checked the DNS logs and nothing really strikes me as
out of place. Aside you are correct in all of your
assumptions previously stated.

Thanks,

Tia

Hmm.. Try and find out if there is some SBS funkiness which can cause the
DNS server to be disabled. I can't think of any other reason why this would
be happening. I'll repost if I find something myself.

Thanks!!

I have checked the domain security policies, but that
doesn't mean I couldn't be wrong. The image did not show.

The image is attached.

Configure your Domain Controller security policy and set it to automatic and
no override on the policy.

This is another problem. I do not have access to the
Domain Controller security policy. It just says access
denied and the group policy is X'ed out. Is there a way
to reset the group policy? Or override the access? I am
the administrator and should have sufficient privileges.

Thanks a lot!!!!

Hmm, you are logged on as the Administrator and you are getting access
denied?

Run mmc, add the Security Configuration and Analysis snap in, you should be
able to analysis the current configuration but if there is a policy being
loaded that disables it you will need to find it and change it.

Ha,

That worked. I added the snap-in. Did some analysis
changed a few things and tried the domain controller
security policy again and it let me in!! I was able to
change the DNS to startup on automatic rather than
disabled. Thank You so much!! You have been very very
helpful and it would have taken me a long time to figure
this one out on my own.

Thanks!!

Not a problem, I think most people don't even think about being able to
configure services startup from the security policy.
