I'm in the process of migrating to windows 2000 Server
from Windows NT 4.0 Server.
My question regarding DNS is the following.
I have my own mail server for my "company.com" located on
the local network,
Part of my website "www.mycompany.com" is hosted with
another company but "secure.mycompany.com" is hosted
locally.
If I use forwards to resolve www.mycompany.com on the
outside, how do I resolve "secure.mycompany.com" on the
inside network? I do not do my own DNS hosting; I use my
ISP's DNS servers. How should I set up my new domain in
windows 2000? And what name should I use for my new
domain?
Thanks for any help.

Well, first of all, with AD, you MUST use only your internal DNS. That's a
requirement and you can;t get around it. If you use your ISP, I guarantee AD
will be full of errors, to the point of nothing working in some cases,
including mail (if Ex2k).

Just use your internal DNS. Create the zone name on your internal DNS and
create the necessary A records (www, secure, mail, etc) and give it the
appropriate IPs.

If your AD zone name is the same as the external name, AND you're hosting
your external name on your DNS, then it's suggested to have two DNS servers,
one for public records, one for AD. In the AD DNS, do what I suggested in
paragraph 2.

Hope that helps
