DNS Client Stops to Work

Hi,

we are unsing Windows 2000 Server (incl. latest SP and
security patches) with IIS as web server and with IMail
as mail server. The DNS-Server-Service is not installed
(deactivated); the DNS-Client is using a DNS server of
the hoster. In general it is working fine.

But in unregular periods (several times a week) the DNS
resolution stops to work (emails can no more sent and the
browser cannot show any site). One can still reach the
configured DNS servers by ping command. The DNS-Client-
Service is still running. A restart of this service is
not solving the problem. Only a complete server reboot
will restore the functionality.

Does anyone know this problem? Are there any ideas how to
find out the source?

Thanks in advance!

I think we have a similar issue. We have two DCs, W2K,
all patched, etc., running W2K DNS service.

These are configured to resolve recursive queries and
every few days one will stop resolving recursive queries.

Sometimes a restart of DNS clears the problem, although
most times requires server reboot.

They are Active Directory integrated servers, btw.

If anyone has any clues, it would be much appreciated.
Unreliable DNS is really bad news.

Cheers.
John.
