Tonight we are going to set up 2 W2K DNS servers. We
currently have NT4.0 network. We will upgrade to AD once we
have DNS set up and running smothly...
So in our current NT environment our domain is ORRM and
our web precence is www.orrm.com which is hosted by our
ISP.So we are only setting up internal DNS servers with
forwarders set up to point to ISP DNS.. Part of my issue is
that according to most, should set up our DNS namespace
other than orrm.com OK...we will use orrm1.orrm.com. My
question is that in the past when I set up a new computer
to join the domain I had to enter ORRM (that is our
internal domain name) and if you look at the network tab
for domain it says ORRM. Am i going to have to go around
and change that for every machine? (clients are W2K
machines) . Or does this not matter till we actually
upgrade to AD. Will these clients still be able to logon to
the domain? Could someone please explain this process to
me? We are installing tonight.
.
No you do not need to change domain name on your clients.
ORRM is netbios domain name. orrm1.orrm.com will be DNS
zone name. When you go to AD you will be asked for Netbios
domain name, just enter ORRM.

So what you are saying is that the netbios domain name of ORRM is still our domain? And if I were to set up a new computer before we go to AD I would still use ORRM because technically our domain name doesn't change until AD is set up at which time will be orrm1.orrm.com and if I install a new computer after that I would use orrm1 instead of orrm. Or your saying I could still use ORRM because I am entering the netbios Domain name and it will know by this? Whould I be able to enter orrm1? So right now even though I am creating the DNS namespace I am not creating a new Domain until I actually set up AD.

Yes to the first part. After you go to AD you should be
able to use ORRM or orrm1.orrm.com when joining a domain.
For win95/98/me you still use ORRM.
