DNS and Child Domains

I have W2K AS, when I create the Child Domain I want it to have it's own
DNS, this is a remote site connected by frame relay. Is it necessary to
create a zone delegation in the root DNS in order for resolution to work
correctly between the two sites? Or, can I create a DNS server in the child
domain and use a forwarder to the root DNS, and forwarders from the root to
the Child Domain? What are my options in this situation?

Thanks,
Alvin

You create a delegation from the root. Then you use a forwarder from the
child.

Is a delegation necessary in this situation? Is it possible to do this
without a delegation, and work correctly?

In addition, just to clarify, you can forward from the child to the parent
NOT from the parent to the child. This will cause a DNS loop that can cause
the DNS service to crash.

Hello All,

The cleanest way for name resolution to work in this scenario, would be to
create a delegation.

"Necessary"? No. There is always the effcient, clean, easy, proper way. And,
there is always a hack.

Do you have something against delegations?
It is the proper way to resolve the child from the parent.
Even if you had a separate child zone on the parent DNS server you would
still need a delegation.

Ok thanks all. I don't have anything against delegations,
just wanted to know if there was another way to go about
it. Actually my site is the child domain, and I thought
maybe there was another way of setting up my DNS without
bothering the CO. But, that seems to be the correct way
of doing it. Question:
1). Does anyone know where I can find some detailed
information on how to configure the child zone and
delegation on the root DNS server?

Thanks,
Alvin
