Point of confusion, does a DC have to be configured to be
a DNS server or just configured to use DNS? I already
have a primary DNS server running NetWare 6 and a
secondary DNS server running Windows 2000 so would prefer
just to point to them unless necessary.

It just need a DNS server, you don't need to run it on the DC.

Not unless you are setting up DNS as AD integrated.
or just configured to use DNS?

It must be pointed to the DNS server set up for AD.

AD MUST have a DNS server that supports SRV records.

I would suggest setting up DNS, as AD integrated, on at least 2 Win 2k DCs
and setting your Netware DNS server as the forwarder.

These links tell how to set up DNS for AD:
How to: Configure DNS for Internet Access In Windows 2000

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300202

Setting Up the Domain Name System for Active Directory

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;237675

In the first link it details how to set up forwarders. I would list your
Netware DNS server as the forwarder.

As far as I know you could point to other DNS. The
disadvantage is that you are not able to have Active
Directory integrated zone which holds the record info in
AD.
