DNS Across Subnets

Greetings,

We have 2 subnets 10.1.1.x and 10.1.2.x our Win 2k PDC is on the
10.1.1.x network. The .2 subnet is connected with a cisco router do I
have to set up dns on the domain controler on the .2 subnet as well?
or should dns be handled on the PDC only?

No. While you can setup additional DCs or DNS to improve
reliability or performance there is no technical requirement to
have one on each "subnet".

Both AD and DNS use routable protocols (IP based) so they
function just fine across routers.

Once you get into wide-area networks (WANs) the need to
local DCs or DNS servers increases due to the performance
and reliability issues.

In Win2000 there is no "PDC" -- just DCs. One of your DCs
holds the role of "PDC emulator" to support legacy clients and
perform a handful of other services like time synchronization.

You generally SHOULD have more than one DC for reliability
and fault tolerance but this had little to do with subnets that are
locally connected (routed LAN.)
 
Is your current zone AD integrated? If so, the DC on .2.x subnet already
has the AD integrated DNS zone and you should point clients on .2.x subnet
to that DC (after you install the DNS server service on the DC). It's not a
requirement to have a DNS server on each subnet but it can help if you have
redundant DNS servers in your environment.
