I am trying to upgrade my Sony DRU-500A drivers and there
is a step indicating I should "disable [DMA setting] in
Windows". How do I do this?
Thanx,
B

DMA (Direct Memory Access) lets your hard disk communicate more quickly with
your memory. Go to Control Panel | System | Device Manager, and look at the
Properties sheets for your hard disk.

In XP you'll find the DMA settings in Device Manager under the IDE
Controllers by selecting the properties for the Primary/Secondary IDE
Channels. If you're running an Intel processor and have installed the Intel
Application Accelerator then you'll need to use the software that came with
this application to view or change DMA settings as there will be no Advanced
Settings tab available in the property pages :-)

That's a better answer than the one I provided.

The only exception is if you have the Intel Application Accelerator
installed. It removes the IDE options from your IDE controller channels in
DM. I have a Sony DRU-500a and have to uninstall the Intel APP Accel,
reboot, change the IDE controller to PIO Only mode, reboot, Install the
firmware upgrade, which reboots during it's install routine, reset UDMA
mode, reboot, install IAA, and reboot! So much work!!! I love WinXP, but
will be glad when a version finally arrives that does not require reboot
after a device driver change.
