Is the DLS device in my sound drivers actually a driver?? because basically
my computer has no sound whatsoever, I've tried all the volume switches,
tried all the ports and the DLS device is working (apparently). So do i need
a separate sound card? or should I be able to hear sound through my comp
anyway? If i don't need a Sound card, then what is wrong with my comp?

Ace of Spades,

In Device Manager, is this the name (DLS device) of the Audio Device shown
when you unfold Sound, video and game controllers? If it is, then, under its
Properties, does the status indicate that This device is working properly?

If the answer to all the above is yes, then that's your sound device. In
that case, there must be some setting somewhere that you need to find to
enable sound. Anyone else?

If in Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, there is no yellow
triangle, no red circle then right click on the Speaker icon in the Notification
Area of the Taskbar, select Playback Devices, if Speakers are not in the window,
right click and select both Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices,
set Speakers as Default and use the Configure and Properties to set up your
speakers. Also, go to the Sound tab to test.

If there is a red X on the Speaker icon in the Notification Area and no audio
device listed under Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager, then
you will have to find out the manufacturer of your audio device and go to their
site or the computer manufacturers site to download appropriate drivers.
