Hi, My son who is away at college is getting the following
when installing with a w2k upgrade disk.

WINDOWS 2000 COULD NOT START BECAUSE OF AN ERROR IN THE
SOFTWARE. PLEASE REPORT THIS PROBLEM : LOAD NEEDED DLL'S
FOR KERNAL. PLEASE CONTACT SUPPORT PERSON TO REPORT THIS
PROBLEM.
My son has been without his computer for two weeks now at
college. Any immediate help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for you support.

Alan

How's he installing? Is he booting from the CD? Is he in Windows trying to upgrade another operating system such as 98? Has the
CD been checked for scratches, cracks, smudges, dried beer? Could just be rubbing alcohol and lint free cloth wiping against the
grain could fix it (or not). Need to know how the install is being run to be better able to help.

My son was given a w2k upgrade disk from the campus UB
Micro Center store. He was told they don't give out the OS
cd to reinstall. He tried upgrading with the "R" (repair)
option.

Sorry to say that it looks like the repair option is not an option. Have him clean the CD with rubbing alcohol and a lint free
cloth going against the grain. Tell him instead of selecting R to press ESC (To continue installing a fresh copy...) then on the
next screen press ENTER after selecting a partition. F8 to agree to the license. The next screen will ask him about formatting.
If there's anything on the drive he wants to keep then he needs to select, "Leave the file system intact, no changes." He may get a
warning that data will be erased. I've never had this happen to me except in PROGRAM FILES but he will have a new profile with an
empty My Documents folder, all his applications will need to be reinstalled. A new system folder will be created as well as all
desktop icons will be gone. The registry will be fresh. The files will still be in the computer and can be found by searching or
Exploring. It looks like the upgrade was botched. It is a very common occurance.
