Hi - I just pulled a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live Value Card out of one
of my PCs because I need the PCI slot it takes up. The onboard audio chip
will be used instead.

I've run into the XP (Pro SP1) shutdown problem described in this MSKB
article:

Windows XP Stops Responding (Hangs) During Windows Shutdown

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307274

I download and reinstalled the patch from the Windows Update Catalog - No
joy.

Then I checked out this article:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

It says to delete the DEVLDR32.EXE in the Windows/System32 folder. I've got
to tell you, that is one persistent file. It keeps getting re-created. I
even used a wiping utility on it after shutting off System Restore and
booting to Safe Mode. All Creative Labs (Software) Registry keys have been
deleted, and so have all other CL files including the one in the Start Up
folder.

There are several other Creative Labs DLLs in the System32 folder.

Question 1 - Can anyone recommend a utility that will identify unused DLLs
so I can track down all the remaining Creative Labs DLLs to delete them?

Question 2 - Any suggestions on how to delete the DEVLDR32.EXE file
mentioned in the aumha.org article?

Thanks

Joe

Hi Joe,

This can usually be fixed by updating your audio drivers to the latest
Creative release.

Other than that, I haven't read the KB article in a great while. In the
meantime, go to the Task Manager and end the process, then delete the .exe.
If that doesn't help:

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup, uncheck the entry then run this script:

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup (Line 148)

Hi Kelly - thanks for the info but still no joy. The onboard sound chip
that I re-enabled is a VIA AC'97, so all the Creative SoundBlaster drivers
have to be removed.

The DEVLDR32.EXE was not in the Task Manager, nor was it in Msconfig.
However, there were three other Creative Labs entries in Msconfig that I
disabled and used your script to remove the entries.

I found this Creative Labs article on removing SoundBlaster drivers in
Windows 2000:

http://dmzweb4.europe.creative.com/...obj(14834),VARSET=centric:,Kb=creative_cli_us

It was helpful in tracking down the files listed an deleting them, at least
most of them. All of the files mentioned in the article are also located in
C:Windows\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab and a few of them including
DEVLDR32.EXE seem to be getting re-created from C:Windows\Driver
Cache\i386\driver.cab on reboot.

I have no idea how to remove the Creative Labs files from C:Windows\Driver
Cache\i386\driver.cab. Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

It wasn't the Creative Labs drivers after all. At least after I went
through the recommended deletion process.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 830957 - solved the problem.

USB Device Does Not Initialize at Startup or Windows XP Stops Responding at
Startup or Shutdown

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830957

I have a wireless Logitech keyboard and a wireless Logitech mouse. They use
different infrared receivers, each of which is plugged into a separate USB
port on my powered USB hub. Following the instructions the MSKB article
solved the shutdown problem.

Thanks again for your help and thanks to the person who posted the " XP
hangs on shutdown w/ethernet" thread for listing several MSKB articles, one
of which is 830957. I hope he gets his shutdown hanging problem solved
soon.

Joe
