Does anyone know if there is any way of getting MM to read/write DivX?
If not, can anyone suggest a good package that can convert MM's AVI/WMV
to DivX? It'd be nice if I could get something that is Open Source or
free but I'm open to hear any recommendations.

I have tried VitualDub but it cannot read the AVI and WMV formats
produced by MM. So I tried capturing the video directly with VirtualDub
but it cannot do this using the Firewire port and I need to use FireWire
to best preserve my video.

Essentially, if I can capture my video via my Firewire port and get it
into DivX format, then my goal would be achieved!

The main reason I'm interested in DivX is because it sounds like I can
get much smaller video files if I get it into that format.

Note that WIndows Media Video (WMV) format is comparable in terms of quality
and size with DivX.

To convert WMV/AVI to divx you need to use the divx software itself. Install
DivX pro from www.divx.com, it comes with all the tools to convert files
into divx format.

Besides this there exist hundreds of converters, many freeware and others
payware. Use google to locate "divx converter".

Use "VirtualDubMod" rather than VirtualDub and select "DirectShowSource" in
"Use AviSynth template" to open a WMV/AVI file.

Hope it helps

In addition to what Rehan says, you could convert the type I DV-AVI file
from MM2 to a type II using a conversion utility... there's a number of them
(see the Setup > Other Software page of my site).

You could then use VirtualDub with an installed Divx codec.
