Check Installed Codecs in Win2K:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device
Manager > Sound, video and game controllers > Video Codecs and/or
Audio Codecs > Properties

Google for Win98 & XP codec locations, I've forgotten. XP sux imho.

M$ Codecs WMPCDCS8.exe from Microsoft

Install Wundoze Media Player 9 at your peril.
7.1 will do the job if you have to use a M$ player.

Divx 5.1 is available from http://www.divx.com

K-Lite Codec Pack including Xvid Codec is available from
http://www.freecodecs.com - click on Codecs on the left. (Do not
re-install the Divx Codecs)

Media Player Classic -
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/media_player_classic.html or

BS Player -
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/bs_play.html

Windows Media Player comes to you from the home of 'Trustworthy
Computing' :)

Got your weekly Security Patch?

Bill making you "acquire" licenses just to play a .wmv movie?
Don't patronise sites that use that tactic. It is the only way to make
brain dead webmasters learn.

Hands up all those that Love M$! or should that just be "Stick 'Em
Up!" ?

http://www.divx.com

I've only used the freeware version, which has no .ini file - i.e.,
contrast and tone have to be reset each time via sliders, but it's
really quick to do. Looking at the website, I guess that would be
version 2.5 (I have 2.1... will update today).

I also like Juke from http://www.wolosoft.com because it's easy to
adjust the aspect if the original source has people looking too wide.
Would suggest you travel with more than one program.

Window Media Player 6.4 is all you need, all it needs is a few codec's.
From personal experience it's best to avoid Codec Packs, they not only
contain things you may not need, but some don't uninstall correctly.

The flowing is just the ones you need...

Divx5 - http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX51Bundle.exe
XviD - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html
OggDS - http://tobias.everwicked.com/oggds.htm (Read the "ReadMe"!)
Ac3Filter - http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ac3filter/ac3filter_0_70b.exe?download

That should take care of 99% of the Divx style movies that you come
across online. Be sure to get the latest security Patches & Download
the MS codec's for WMP first before installing Divx, one of the updates
messed-up my installed codec's a while back forcing me to reinstall.
