I have been having a problem creating a distribution list in Outlook for a
group of my contacts. I have been successful importing the names from an
excel spreadsheet and then copying the names to the select members window,
however, when I start a new email the list does not show up when I click on
the TO: button the list defaults to the contacts folder but not in the
select members window. I sure would appreciate any suggestions.

what happens if you type the name of the DL in the To field?

if you rather use the extra steps of selecting the list, you need to either
double click on it or press the To button at the bottom of the dialog to add
it.

Thankyou, If I type the name of the distribution list in the to: field it
just gives the name of the list and not the + sign to expand the list to
show the members of the list. as for your alternative suggestion, I don't
quite follow what you mean.

If I click on the to: button in the new email, the select names window
opens but the drop down list on the right that show the lists of names
does not show he contacts folder that holds the distribution list I created.
I'm very confused.

Once the name resolves, the + sign should show - press alt+k to resolve it
immediately.

ok... so the DL is in a different folder from your normal contacts? that's
not recommended for a number of reasons, but all you need to do is right
click on the contacts folder it is in and choose properties, then on the
outlook address book tab add a check to show it as an address book. It
should work fine after that.

I'd like to thank you for your prompt responses, I wouldn't have known
wherelse to look for help. I did as you suggested and right clicked on the
Folder that holds my list, choose properties, then the outlook address tab
however the check to show it as an address book is shaded and I don't have
the choice to show it as an address book. I hate to be such a pest but am
anxioues to resolve the problem.

from my boiler plate answer to this problem:

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

What version of Outlook? I don't see that you ever mentioned it. The
expansion of the DL name is a feature offered in Outlook 2003.

Thanks for all your help, it took awhile but the problem now appears to be
resolved.

Your suggestion worked, however, I'm finding that the address book that I
added doesn't stay in the name list and I have to repeat the process over
again

If you cant get the Outlook Address Book service to remain in the mail
profile, you should create a new mail profile.
