Distribution List

I've created a data base, imported it into Outlook 2002
and all went well. It's under Contacts and there are
multiple Categories. Here's my challenge ...

I can't find an easy and quick way to set up each
Category as a separate distribution list. Every thing I
look at tells me to set up the distribution list and
select the names one-by-one. There's got to be an
easier/better way.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The real question is why do you need to? Categories are more reliable and
more flexible than DL's.

I need the flexability of being able to send email to
different "groups" and if there's a way to do it by
category, en mass, then that will solve my challenge. I
want to be able to simply put the DL, Category into the
TO: or BCC: line and have Outlook do the rest.

In Netscape its a breeze and has always been. Migrating
to Outlook has been less that a pleasure.

You can select the entire category and do a merge to e-mail. I would like to
know if anyone knows if it is possible to do this to a BCC like he is
asking. Anyone?

Various approaches:

1) Copy and paste from To to Bcc.

2) Use an actual mail merge that sends an individually addressed message to
each recipient. This is by far the best method of bulk sending, as it is
more likely to avoid spam filters.

3) Write code to do the equivalent of #1

Well, #2 sounds like a great idea - BUT, nothing I have,
including a Jim Boyce book addresses the steps to do
an "email merge." I did open a new message and tried
Tools, but couldn't get to a mail merge option. Have
also tried the Help part of Outlook with the same results.

Any suggestions?

Mail merge is a Word feature but you can start it from Outlook. Go to your
Contacts folder, select the contacts you want to mail merge, choose Tools |
Mail Merge, and take it from there.
