Distribution List Query

A user had permission to another colleagues Contacts in Outlook. The user
copied the colleagues contact folder (which included subfolders containing a
large range of distribution lists) to a public folder. The user then deleted
those contacts and distribution list from her colleagues profile.
When the user updated a contact in the top level folder e,g a changed an
email address, she would open a distribution list and click "Update Now" to
pick up the changes from the top level Contact folder. This was working fine.
Now the user has noticed (about 4 months on) that the distribution lists are
not picking up changes to email addresses. Also the icons listed next to the
contacts have changed, some of the distribution list items have a contact
form icon (double click on the item it will open the contact form) the rest
show a properties icon (double click and shows the same dialog box as to when
you click on the Add New button, to input external email addresses (as
opposed to selecting from the Companies GAL).
By the look of things it looks like some of the items in the distribution
list has now lost the link back to the top level folder.

Is there a way of fixing this issue without having to recreate the
distribution lists? Is this an erratic problem with distribution list update
now button? Any inforamtion on this will be gratefully received.

"erratic" is the word we use to describe the Update button. I would never depend on it. In fact, I never even use DLs for more than a handful of very small, very static lists.

Do you have any suggestions of work arounds other than recreating the links
manually? I take it there are no hot fixes for such a problem?

Recreating the DLs is the only solution I know.
