Distribution List anomalies

Configuration:
WinXP (recently upgraded from Win2K), Office 2003 (upgraded from Office 2000 several months ago). Plenty of horsepower and disk space

Symptoms:
When attempting to add members to a distribution list, five occurances of Contact are displayed. When I click on all but one, I get the following message:

"The Address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder from the Outlook Addess Book, see MS Office Outlook Help."

I've checked help and can't find anything that addresses this problem

I'm guessing that this is possibly linked to an earlier problem I had with Outlook and .pst files. Several months ago, I started displaying multiple occurances of Contact folders that was eventually fixed by editing the Registry. I haven't tried to create any distribution lists since fixing the previous problems, so I'm not sure if these mulitple occurances were there before

Also, the list of contact folders under "Show Names from the:" begins with Outlook Address Book. If I click on Outlook Address Book, I get the message No Entries in this Address Book.

Finally, there are several contact folders within this .pst that are not displayed at all. Of course, the one I'm trying to build the distribution list for is not displayed at all

Very common problem posted here almost every day.
Two things you need to do:
1. Remove the invalid references to Contact Folders here: Tools > E-mail
accounts > View or change existing directories or address books > Outlook
Address Book > Change. >
2. Enable the other Contacts Folders you want to appear within the Outlook
Address Book as email address Books: Properties > Outlook Address Book Tab.

FYI, the Outlook Address Book should be empty. It is merely holds the
Contact Folder you want to display.

That helped get rid of the unwanted folders, but I can't see the other contact folders within the same .pst file. Does the Distribution List feature only support the primary Contacts folder?

You don't see the other Contact Folders where?
You can create a DL in any Contact Folder.

Sorry about the confusion...
I have several different Contacat folders within the .pst file. From this sequence of actions: File|New|Distribution List|Select Members when I open the drop down list under the "Show Names from the" heading I see a list of Contact folders. Your previous suggestion allowed me to eliminate the ones that were not working (which I believe were there because I created them earlier, not understanding what I was doing). Now I don't see the other Contact folders and don't know how to add them to this drop down list

Yee Haa!! I figured it out. The solution was clicking on the contact folder in the Folder List, selecting Properties, then the Outllook Address Book tab, and checking "Show this folder as an email Address Book". I'm good to go now

Thanks for your help with figuring out what was going on

Then you must not have enabled the new folders as email address books in
their properties yet.
