I have a video recorder "Sony Digital Handycam
DCR-TRV17". After it records some video, the video
is re-displayed on TV. I am now wanting to re-display
the recorded video on Computer. Anyone knows the method
to do that? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

First please note that a lot of Sony camera users have problems interfacing
their camera with their computer, there are some notes on this on the web
site www.papajohn.org.

To display your video, you must first capture it and store it on your
computer. This is achieved with programs like Movie Maker 2. If you run the
program you will see in the "Tasks" section the option to capture Video.
Assuming you use MM2 to do this the captured file will be in the AVI format.
This is an uncompressed format and therefore the resulting file will be
large..for example a one hour video will occupy anything from 12GB upwards..
You can then play that file wouthout any further work with Windows Media
Player.

What you do with the file from then on can be very simple, for instance you
may want to convert it into a WMV format and store the result on a CD which
could be accessed by your computer at any later time, or you may want to
convert into DVD, which will require extra software and of course a DVD
writer. You could also save it in the VCD or SVCD format for playback on
your home DVD player (if the player supports those standards), but you would
again need extra software for that too

There are lots of ways of handling the file once you have it. My first
venture into this field was to store the AVI files on a CD...you can't get
very much on a CD if its uncompressed DV-AVI, which is why I quickly moved
to DVD
