Can anyone point me to an explanation of how Outlook decides to
display the name of the sender of an email.
If the sender is in my Contacts list I expected that Outlook might
use the field called "Display as" but this seems not to be the case.
(Be gentle, please, I'm new to this!)
Outlook will display whatever value the sender sends you, just as their mail
client will display whatever you send. You control what that is by opening
your mail account (Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next, select the account, click
Change) and putting something in the "Your Name" field. If they you
Outlook, that's how they'll control it as well. Whatever is in their "Your
Name" field is what Outlook will show you.
Right-click on one of their messages and choose Options. Scroll through the
headers that will display and look for the header that starts with "From:"
That line will look something like this:
From: Brian Tillman <
[email protected]>
or
From: "Brian Tillman" (e-mail address removed)
The string between the "From:" and the mail address is what Outlook will
display and Outlook will include whatevery you have in your "Your Name"
field in the same way on the From header that your recipients receive.
Clear?
