Displaying JPGs on DVD player?

I've discovered that my Phillips DVD player has a limitation of a mere
256 files when in the mode allowing JPGs / MP3s to be played. That
seems incredibly low. Anyone know if there's some free software around
that can help me get around that please?

How would you get against a limitation of the DVD player?
Can you use folders in the CD?

That would probably take a firmware update, or try using folders. Folders
work on mine.

What sort of discs are you using? Burning JPGs in VCD format may not
have a limit, for example, because it's one pic per "chapter". I don't
know if there's a limit of DVD chapters for a given movie?

Thanks for the four replies so far. I've used about 10 CDs (standard
CD-Rs) in my experiments over last few days, and pretty sure it's a
256 limit, not per folder. I'll make one more definitive test to be
sure - but almost out of CDs!

I was wondering about VCD. Know nothing about it, but saw it as an
option in Nero. Unfortunately a brief reading of Nero's Help on that
facility left me no wiser; it didn't seem to relate to what I was
seeing on the screen.

It was at that point that I posted my query, as I would guess there is
burning software out there designed for this sort of thing. The 'file
limit' could hopefully be overcome in some way.

Usually you can't fit 256 MP3s on to one CD. . . maybe 200. . .

Try VCDEasy to overcome the 256 limitation for JPG files. IIRC you can
put almost 2000 JPGs on one CD (JPG file size permitting). You'll need
to match the type of CD you create to the type your DVD player can play.
Figure that out *first* - been there, didn't do that. ;)

There's some useful info and links at the author's site ($ware version):

Excellent, thanks Susan. Duly installed. It looks good and I'm
impatient to try it when family commitments allow. Fairly daunting at
first sight, but that's presumably a sign of its versatility.

Thanks too for introducing me to both pricelessware and themolezone.
Can't wait to browse those thoroughly. One quick query please: if a
program at http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_MULTIMEDIA.php
has no entries in columns PW, I, W, and Ware, I take it that it may
still be freeware? (I based that on just one example, Eazy VCD.)

It looks daunting but I found it pretty easy to use. The only problem
was finding the right format to use for the DVD player.

FWIW - I don't think I'd want try converting 2000 JPGs on my computer
(WIN98, 128 MB RAM). I experimented with a much smaller number and it
took a quite a while to convert them.

The program is *much* faster on the "kids" machine (which is newer than
mine). I can't remember if my daughter-in-law has completely filled a CD
but I know she has put *many* images on one. IIRC creating a CD takes
about an hour on their machine.

You might want to work with just a few photos at first and a rewritable
CD if you have one available. Quicker results that way while you're in
the experimental stage. . .

App's should be *some* kind of free. . . to the best of my knowledge
and belief. . . The pages are a work in progress. The "Ware" column
is where Freeware, Liteware, Donationware etc. is noted - blanks spaces
just mean I still lack that information. . .

If you're still around, Susan, could I ask for a little more help
please...? Or from any other user of VCDEasy.

I successfully made my first VCD, thanks largely to your reassurance
above. But that included only 31 images, so I'm now trying a more
realistic one with 600 or so.

As I compose this, the program appears to be slowly doing its stuff
creating these mpg stills, although I didn't consciously click
Generate. Or is it merely 'assembling' the input files, I wonder? (I'm
loathe to take a look in the output Folder with Explorer, as I recall
seeing some warning about not doing so.)

But I'm not at all confident about whether these will *fit* on my CD?
I saw no advice on this in the tutorial. The only reference was that
the author said he/she always used the 'Max quality' setting. So I did
so too on my first trial, but that appeared to use 12MB per image. If
so, at say 600 MB, I'd get only 50 images. Surely that can't be true?
But if my logic *is* correct, presumably I must drastically reduce the
size of each mpg? Is there no estimate of capacity versus size within
the program or its documentation? Or is trial and error the name of
the game?

What about a menu? The author mentioned the word fleetingly, but so
far I've seen no way of creating one. I'd assumed I could do so, and
then select a folder and image, rather than displaying every image in
sequence.

Finally, are you able on your DVD player to bypass the preset fixed
time (10 secs or whatever), so that you can quickly flick forward or
backward? In theory it seems you use the Previous and Next settings,
but my Phillips player remote doesn't appear to have those!

Thanks for your help.

I'm here - with large quantities of egg all over my face. My humblest
apologies for misleading you. I looked for the VCDEasy shortcut,
couldn't find it and eventually figured out why.

I had two programs mixed up - all my comments apply to the one I tried -
which was:

Program: Photo to VCD Creator
Author: Martin Borkhuis
Ware: (Liteware)
http://www.nu2.nu/photovcd/

the current Version is 2.0.3 - the version I have installed is v 1.3.0

from the site "Approximatly 1900 photo's can be put on a VCD / SVCD."

If you have large JPG files the number might be controlled by the
capacity of the CD. . .

I can't tell you much more *Photo to VCD Creator* than I already have. I
only used the app long enough to sort out the problem my daughter-in-law
was having (tbe recording to the wrong format problem).

Again, humble apologies for the mix-up. Leaving now to find a hole to
crawl into. . .

Thanks Susan. Don't worry, BTDT. Far worse clangers than that! And the
upside is that I can now at least *use* this VCDEasy program. However,
after my initial experiments, I fear its name is a tad misleading for
someone like me who didn't know a Video Compact Disc from a Vertical
Control Damper or a Variable Capacitance Diode <g>.

I'll have a crack at Photo to VCD Creator asap.

BTW, and for anyone ending up here with a similar sort of enquiry, my
second test (600+ files) worked in the sense that all files seem to
have been created on the CD (a RW type this time). But the sequence
was not as I expected and I still cannot find a way of manually
influencing display progress, apart from stopping and restarting.

Confidence breeds success. :) Next time around we can trade places - you
can assure me that a program you haven't tried is "easy to use". . . ;)
