Displaying Images on Mouse Click

I have several thumbnails displayed on a slide. When a thumbnail is clicked,
the corresponding large image is displayed (similar to the Filmstrip View in
Windows Explorer). The order of events (i.e. which image is to be clicked
first) is not known; it is strictly up to what the user wants to see and when.

I got the above to work by putting in command buttons with images and
running macros. Is there a way to do the same thing without having to use
macros?

You will want to look into trigger animation events (new for PowerPoint
2002, I seem to remember). Triggers allow for non-linear presentation
techniques (which is a fancy way of saying that you can do what you
described).

By setting the trigger for each of the big pictures to hide each of the
other pictures and show the one you want, you can set up a nice little slide
show style effect.

Any object(a picture, an autoshape, a textbox) that is on a slide can
be be given an 'action setting' that reacts to a mouse click. This
action could be 'go to slide #'. When the user clicks the object the
action is performed.
To get to the actions settings, either choose it from the 'Slide Show'
menu or maybe the right-click 'shortcut menu'. You want "Mouse-click ->
Hyperlink to
-> slide... "

So, for example, put your thumbnails on slide 2, put your large images
on sequential slides. For each thumbnail: select it, and hyperlink to
the slide with the large image. You can polish things up by adding a
picture or shape to the slide master (that way all the slides get a
copy of it), the mouse-click action hyperlinks them to the thumbnail
slide.

Powerpoint Help, using the Answer Wizard tab.

Thank you for your feedback. Your description sounds exactly what I am
looking for; but I can't find anything on "trigger animation events"
anywhere. Help (ppt 2002) doesn't list anything relevant. In fact keyword
"trigger" isn't listed. I Googled “trigger animation events†and got 7
unrelated hits.

Any further direction as to how to implement a trigger?

I got the hyperlink action to work but does that mean I will need new slide
for every potential action (picture enlargement)? Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, my suggestion puts each enlarged image on a different slide that
the other enlarged images.

OTOH, Bill's suggestion or triggered animations seems to work very
nicely.
The first entry in his list of links shows an example that is very
clear to me.

I didn't know how triggers worked, but now I have learned something.

I just found this post and the animated triggers are what I am intersted in.
I actually followed the link and directions and understand how it works but
I am not sure how to apply this to many images. I have 28 images that would
be layered on top of one another. I want the presenter to be able to cycle
through the images on mouse clicks until they display the image which will
work for the presentation (i.e. if the ppt was being given to a church, I
would want to cylce through the images until the church image appeared, etc.)

I hope this isn't too cryptic. Can you help
